Hi there, I’m Ashley

Lies About Parenting Home Page

Too often, I feel like I’m doing a million things at once! I hate the feeling of juggling too much, don’t you? Between blogging, blogging about blogging, mothering, womaning (hey, new word!), and creating new books and products, it often feels like the real me – the one who likes reading and lounging at the beach – gets squashed under all those hats.

So here’s the real me saying hi to you. I’m a mother to a sweet, loud little girl. I’m partner to a  responsible, wonderful man. I’m a small business owner, a traveler, a Pinterest-addict, a writer, a big sister, and a friend.

My mission here at Lies About Parenting (LAP) is to give you, bright mama or papa, some badass ideas.  I started LAP in early 2015 to help spread the word about practical parenting practices that make life easier for moms and families. I saw too many families falling apart trying to “do” everything they were supposed to. So I found a way to share ideas that work and retired from my real estate sales career to do just that.

As my writing evolved, my priorities evolved. I found myself helping other parents share stories and tips about their best parenting and life practices.

I learned a lot. But the one thing that has stuck with me is that us moms, we have to find satisfaction in our own lives before we can raise kids who feel the way we want them to feel… happy, satisfied, and healthy.

I’ll be the first to admit I still pour most of my time, energy, and money into my child. And that’s not going to change for me, so I won’t apologize for it. But what I am trying to do, here on LAP and in real life, is find a healthier balance in everyday living. I actively search for ways to make my life as a mother mesh with my life as a woman.

So I started writing about it. Then I started passing along writing tips and tricks I’ve learned along the way. Honestly, I struggled with starting the Writing section of this blog.

Who wants to listen to me? Definitely not my child ;-)

I don’t have a journalism degree. There’s no MFA in creative writing with my name on it.

What I do have is a not-so-secret formula for success: Do what works. That’s it. No big questions or crazy action plans. With writing, with life, I just watch people doing something well, and then I do what they do. I’m not a blogging genius and I am laughably far from being a perfect parent. I’m just me, and I want to get to know you.

I want to share with you all the things I’m learning along the way, in parenting and life. From parenting to publishing to home-buying (I spent many years in real estate sales), I’m passing along what works and trying my best to learn from what doesn’t.

Being happy takes work, geez.

And not everyday is a great, but I’ve realized a few things. First, I can change. I always have a choice. I can save money, be a more patient parent, keep a greener home, and complete projects that I start. Holding myself accountable is the key.

Second, I don’t want what I thought I wanted. A luxurious life is not my end-goal. I want a real life, designed the way I want to live it. Raising kids to think for themselves, giving back, reaching my personal goals in writing and life, and designing a happy home and lifestyle are what my goals look like.

Lastly, but most importantly, I want to pass on information that too often gets squirreled away or forgotten. From editing tips to home-buying tricks, I’m here to pass along what’s working and talk about what’s not.

If this is your first time visiting, I’d love for you to get to know me better. If you’ve got lots of time, start by reading about my battle with depression, and then read why I only leave out a few toys at a time or how I edit my writing to get published. That pretty much covers who I am.

Except this site is about more than just me.

Parenting

Mama, you know what’s best for your child and family. I’m just here to boost your confidence. We used to call ourselves “lazy parents” but people thought I was eating Bon-Bons (remember those chocolate ice cream treats?! Yum.) on the couch while my kid ran wild. So.Not.True. It’s practical parenting strategies for modern-day moms. And yes, one strategy I use daily does include sitting on the couch with a book for a few minutes to get some much-needed me-time and reinforce values I want to pass on. If that’s lazy, I’ll take it.
